Knowing how to clean dog beds can make a huge difference in how long the bed lasts. While you cannot expect the bed to last throughout your pet’s lifetime, you can make it look nicer in your room and keep it comfortable for your companion for as long as possible before you need to buy a new dog bed. Foam dog beds require more hands-on cleaning but doing this process once every few weeks is better for your dog’s health.
How to Clean Foam Dog Beds
Most foam dog beds are covered with a slipcover so the foam is protected from pet hair. Unzip the slipcover, take it outside, and shake it to remove as much hair and dust as possible. You can also try a pet lint roller if shaking is not doing its job. Next, soak the slipcover in your sink or a bucket with hot water for about 15 minutes. This will kill any insect eggs that may be using it as a nest. After the 15 minutes is up, wring out as much water as you can, put it in your washing machine, and have it go through a cycle using the heavy-duty setting.
When your washing machine is busy with that, vacuum the foam bed to remove sneaky pet hair and dust that managed to get in there. For a more thorough clean, soak the foam bed in your bathtub with clean hot water and mild detergent. When the water is not too hot, work the soap through the foam and set something heavy on top to keep it under water for it to soak in. After a few minutes drain the water, fill it again with clean water to help wash the soap out as you squeeze the foam. Keep working with it until all of the suds are gone.
Place the slipcover and foam bed outside in the sun to help them dry. Do not use your dryer because the cover may shrink. Once dry you can zip the cover back over the foam and give your dog its clean dog bed!
